CALIFORNIA
Los Angeles: Family, friends, and those ubiquitous Kardashians. (Here’s some pre-trip California dreaming for good measure.)

CROATIA
This early-September week in Split included some amazing day trips. You can read my take on the city of Split, visit Brela Beach vicariously through this post, cross the border into Bosnia and Herzegovina, ferry over to the island of Hvar, and finish the journey in front of Krka’s waterfalls. Plus, stalk the lovely apartment we stayed in, and mull over a quick bit of pre- and post-vacation musing.

ILLINOIS
Sweet home Chicago: Lesson learned—an all-too-brief trip to the Second City only whets the appetite for more.

NEW YORK
Brooklyn: Distance running on Coney Island, Israeli brunch and more outdoor space than I thought existed in NYC.

MAINE
Lake Sebago: Memories of past Augusts, and all the moose-gazing, stargazing, and almanac trivia games they entailed.

MARYLAND
Annapolis: A one-year anniversary, fun with midshipmen, and possibly the best restaurant meal I’ve ever had.

VIRGINIA
Charlottesville: Soul music, campus life and some reminiscing about apples.
Great Falls National Park: Some close-to-D.C. nature, rock-climber awe, and a crashing waterfall.
Middleburg: Polo ponies and picnics in Virginia’s answer to the Hamptons.
Purcellville: Fun at the peach orchard, where I worked up an appetite for my first-ever pulled pork sandwich.
Richmond: Cruising the canal system, gaping at stained glass and finding beaches in the most unlikely locations.
Shenandoah National Park: Roadside farmstands, gorgeous valley views, and learning that there’s no such thing as “the Shenandoahs.” (And a return trip, of course!)

WEST VIRGINIA
Harper’s Ferry: An artillery demonstration, uphill hiking, and one historic little town where we celebrated Halloween. Look for the bright autumn leaves!
